The effect of the global economy and the lack of consumer demand has significantly reduced international shipping volumes particularly in containerized oceanfreight. Traditionally, the last quarter was always peak season, where demand for containers, space of vessels, especially to North America was high. During this time a peak season surcharge was in effect, and it still is as shipping lines try to stay above the water. Studies however have shown that there really isn't a peak any more and there is still plenty of space. Read more at
